It's Winter Time, Little Bear

When I was a kid, one of my favorite stories was about a little bear who didn't want to go hibernate. He wanted to play in the leaves, watch the bugs, roll around and have fun. His mother kept saying to him, "But it's winter time, Little Bear." That became a saying in our house...and now that I'm in New Hampshire, I think I'll be saying it a lot!

That said, I'm still waiting for the first real snow of the season. Well, the second...we did have a lovely snowfall on Thanksgiving, so it was a terrific white Thanksgiving day. And luckily enough, I was cooking all day and didn't have to drive in it. I like watching the snow, and walking in it, but NOT driving in it. I'm also looking forward to building a nice, cozy fire in our woodburning stove--as soon as my hubby cleans it out and checks the flue.

Winter, of course, also brings Christmas and other December holidays, and I am NEVER ready for them. This year is no exception. Well, Christmas will be skimpy anyway, since our house back in Kansas hasn't sold yet. (sigh) But I haven't even thought about cards, let alone the few presents I plan to purchase, or putting up the tree.

How about you? Are you one of those people who's so organized, your decorations are up the day after Thanksgiving, and you've bought all your Christmas presents, wrapped them, and addressed all the cards that same weekend? Or are you one of those like me who has great ambitions to be efficient *this* year, but somehow it never seems to happen?

Oh man, I have to get going on that shopping...baking those Christmas cookies...addressing those cards. My work is cut out for me.

Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!

Hi, Liz. Kansas to New Hampshire, that's quite a way to go.

My husband and I toured through the New England States a few years ago and it's absolutely gorgeous down there. I'd love to go back again some day. My two favourite places that we visited were Woodstock, Vermont and Camden, Maine. Something about both those towns drew me. I imagine renting a small cottage by the water, or a bed and breakfast in the woods and spending a week alone writing. Maybe one day.

Me ready for Christmas...never. Although, I did something so out of character today, I actually went out and did most of my Christmas grocery shopping. I figured I'd get it done while the store weren't busy. We get our tree this weekend and I'll finish my shopping next week. Hmmm, it sounds like I've got things under control, verrrrry unusual.

I'm looking forward to the holidays, mainly because we close our business during that time and this year the kids (in our area anyway) don't go back to school until the 9th of January. Woohoo, that means we'll stay closed as well. Ahhh, the thought of two and a half weeks off fills me with joy.

Talk to you later,
cathy

Hi Cathy, I think New England is a perfect spot for a story! I like the idea of spending a week alone writing, too. Maybe we should start a writers' retreat!

It's snowing like gangbusters here, probably 10" on the ground already and still coming down. That's a change from western Kansas, which got cold in the winter but was pretty dry.

Enjoy your long holiday vacation! Hope you don't get cabin fever. ;-)

Are you kidding??? I'd love a writers retreat in New England. I'd have to convince my husband to let me sneak away for a few days, but there are ways to convince him of almost anything. :-) Only kidding. He's really very supportive of my writing.

I'll probably be too busy writing to get cabin fever. I'm half way through one manuscript, but this last week I've been getting urges to start another one. The characters and story are prodding at me, so I think I'll have to set the fantasy aside and start this one. It has tones of a gothic romance, which is something I'd really love to write.

Have a great day,
Cathy

Cathy, if you set up that writing retreat, let me know. I'm in. ;-)

I love gothic romance! So I say, go for it. Definitely one of my favorite genres.

I'm working on a new story right now...involving old wive's tales. Just at the beginning stages, but it came to me and wouldn't leave me alone, so I'm in the same boat as you.
